FAQ

What is SONI?

SONI, the Study on Nonprofit Investing, is a short survey about nonprofit investment policies and results. Participants receive a complimentary copy of the results. Over 700 nonprofits are expected to participate this year.

What’s different about this year?

  • The 2015 SONI identified a significant performance gap for nonprofits. In 2015, we examine if loose policy controls or fees are the culprit.
  • The survey is shorter and will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
  • The survey analysis will be specifically designed with a single page dashboard report that you can share with your Board.

What’s the same as last year?

  • You will be able to compare the amount you hold in reserves to your peers based on budget size and your nonprofit type.
  • You will be able to verify that your reserves are reasonably allocated among different types of investments based on your size and type.
  • You will be able to verify that your investment performance is reasonable in relation to your peers.
  • You will receive a checklist of investment policy best practices.

How can I prepare to complete the survey expeditiously?

  • Have an understanding of your organization’s budget and finances.
  • Have year-end 2015 investment account balances and performance data.
  • Have a copy of your current investment policy for access to details such as:
    • Target asset allocation
    • Roles and Responsibilities
    • Guidelines and restrictions
  • Have detail about investment fees (if you don’t know, you can skip this section)
